I began developing this structure back in 1998, after I had a great many
entries to sort. Its founding principles follow a few basic "rules":
-
The overall, upper-level hierarchy is to remain fixed as new entries fill
the "leaf" subcategories.
-
Entries remain at their initial placements, despite their secondary relevancy
to other existing and newly-emergent subcategories.
-
No subcategory shall be allowed to have more than 7 entries; such a subcategory
is split into two or more parts.
-
The new subcategories must each have two or more entries. Though
this permits as many as 4 new parts, the typical split is into two--a 4-4
or 5-3.
-
A split subcategory retains no "generic" entries; all are moved into the
sub-parts.
The effect of such rules is that the structure grows outwards like a tree.
Furthermore, the activity in various subcategories mimics a living plant
in that certain branches produce more entries and grow while others stay
in place. There is a distinction, also, between the earlier classifications,
with no entries, and the lowest-level, entry-containing subcategories,
just as trees are composed of wood towards the root and leaves at the ends
of branches.
I am not sure what it would be like to read the entries in the order
of the hierarchy. I suspect they do not have sufficient transition
from one to the next to make a very good flat text. But what I do
have is a description of my world view, and the reasons for initially resenting
such a world but eventually finding that I need a way to live with it and
within it.
